Ex-GM Plant to House $17 Million Solar Energy Farm

A central Indiana city finally plans to turn a long-vacant industrial property into a major renewable energy hub. After decades in production with thousands of workers once on the payroll, the Chevrolet plant in Muncie, Indiana, closed its doors for good in 2006.
In the years since, the facilities on the sprawling property were gradually torn down, leaving only a vacant, blighted stretch on the city’s near southwest side.
Early last year, however, Muncie officials and a GM-linked trust announced an agreement to sell 53 acres to the city in hopes of building a $17 million solar farm. One year later, the city council has signed off on continued talks…
