Cobalt-free cathode materials for the new generation of lithium-ion batteries – CIC energiGUNE.
One of the research objectives within the Lithium-ion battery field is the development of new high-energy density cathode materials that do not contain cobalt. The reason to avoid cobalt is its risk of supply, as studies claim that there will not be enough cobalt before 2030 to meet the market needs. Therefore, new cobalt-free alternatives such as the high-voltage spinel LNMO are currently being investigated.
Within the Advanced cathode research line at CIC energiGUNE, we are involved in several European funded R&D projects i.e. CoFBAT, 3believe, HighSpin, Nextcell where this cathode material is employed.
