Rio Tinto and Fortescue in talks on green hydrogen to replace fossil fuels.
Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm has contacted Fortescue Metals Group chairman Andrew Forrest to see if the two mining heavyweights can find common ground on green hydrogen and its potential to replace fossil fuels.
Rio and Fortescue, who mine iron ore side-by-side in Western Australia, are taking a collaborative approach to reducing their carbon footprint, with both companies looking to build large-scale solar and wind farms near their WA mines.
Aside from driving Fortescue’s strategy to become a major player in global supply of green hydrogen, Dr Forrest is now the biggest player in Australian renewables after paying more than $4 billion for CWP renewables through his privately owned Squadron Energy.
