Hanwha Aerospace Gearing up to Develop Hydrogen Fuel Cells for UAM


Hanwha Aerospace will develop a hydrogen fuel cell system for urban aviation mobility (UAM).

Hanwha Aerospace will develop a hydrogen fuel cell system to be used for urban aviation mobility (UAM).

The company announced on Jan. 3 that it has recently won a project to develop a lightweight fuel cell for aviation mobility from the Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning, which is affiliated with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The project will cost 21 billion won over the past four years. Hanwha Aerospace plans to secure key technologies for aviation hydrogen fuel cells by 2025.

Hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through chemical reactions between hydrogen and oxygen. Unlike fossil fuels, there is no by-product from hydrogen fuel cells other than pure water. They are also lighter than lithium-ion batteries. In…
