Clean hydrogen fuel cells could cut water pollution, too | Letters

Regarding the recent op-ed, “This N.J. senator says our transportation future will be fueled by hydrogen,” by state Sen. Gordon Johnson, D-Bergen:Johnson advocates for New Jersey to use a share of “clean hydrogen” federal funding for research into fuel-cell vehicles, which release only water and heat as emissions.It seems there is a golden opportunity to kill two birds with one stone if water that isn’t potable can be utilized to separate the hydrogen from the oxygen. If done on an industrial scale, this could provide fuel for trucking, while also eliminating some water pollution. If they can also purify some of the water to make it potable again, that’s a win-win.Sure, there are some technology issues with this process, but they have to be solved anyway.
