Siemens Mobility partners with University of York to explore use of solar energy to power UK’s trains

Siemens Mobility has entered a partnership with the University of York and British Solar Renewables to develop revolutionary solutions for powering Britain’s railways. The projects are intended to demonstrate Net Zero Traction on the East Coast Main Line and a 25kv battery train charging station, and two separate funding streams have been made available. The first project will allow the company to complete the final stages of technical development of a solution that allows solar energy to be fed directly to trains. Funds for this development have been provided by the Department for Transport through Innovate UK’s ‘First of A Kind’ programme.
