Zen Energy buys 200,000MWh of clean energy in latest PPA

Zen Energy was founded in 2004 and was merged into Sanjeev Gupta’s Simec Energy Australia in 2017, two years after Professor Garnaut joined the company.Professor Garnaut and partner Raymond Spencer joined forces with Mr Gupta in 2017 to form SIMEC Zen Energy. At the time they outlined a $1 billion slate of solar, battery and pumped-hydro projects for the Whyalla steelworks and other businesses of the former Arrium steel company which Mr Gupta’s interests bought from administrators that year.However, Professor Garnaut and Mr Spencer also wanted to offer low-cost clean energy to third parties in Australia, so a divorce was agreed under which GFG kept the projects at its Whyalla Steelworks and Zen Energy took the third-party retail business and development projects.Zen has grown steadily, striking a number of deals including a 2020 agreement with the government science agency CSIRO…
