Samsung SDI’s prismatic batteries
The share of prismatic batteries in the global battery market increased from 53.1 percent in the first quarter of 2021 to 63.6 percent in the first quarter of 2022, according to SNE Research on May 17.
During the same period, the share of pouch type batteries decreased from 25.7 percent to 20.8 percent and that of cylindrical type batteries from 21.2 percent to 15.6 percent.
As prices of raw materials for batteries have soared, demand for LFP batteries, which are mainly manufactured in the prismatic shape, has shot up. As a result, CATL and BYD, the two largest battery makers in China, have increased their market shares. The usage of CATL’s batteries inflated in the European market.
