Renewable natural gas touted as clean energy |

BOSTON Renewable natural gas is being touted as a clean alternative to fossil fuels, but environmentalists  Last week, National Grid Environmentalists also point out that the gas isn’t being produced widely. 

In Massachusetts, the only place where renewable natural gas is currently being produced is at the Deer Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Boston Harbor, where methane derived from human-generated waste has been used for more than 15 years to power steam turbines that produce much of the electricity for the facility. Federal programs for renewable fuels are providing incentives for projects to convert biogas into renewable natural gas.
