Hydrogen is being hailed by many as the solution to decarbonizing large sectors of the economy and everything from power generation to municipal heating. The hydrogen market is predicted to grow to $2.5 trillion in direct revenues by 2050. Aviation is no different, and for many, it is an obvious solution to a very dire problem – it just needs more time to develop.
OEMs such as Airbus, Embraer, and FlyZero and new powertrain and supply system developers including ZeroAvia and Universal Hydrogen are competing with each other regarding concepts and investments, touting hydrogen’s benefits and potential. Hydrogen‘s naysayers meanwhile argue it is too expensive, too cumbersome to store on an aircraft, or too inefficient.
