Vladimir Putin’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine is a terrible, wrong-headed act rightly condemned by the world. We must do all we can to support the Ukrainian people while averting the specter of wider conflict in Europe.
The tragedy in Ukraine presents an important opportunity to the world. Even before President Joe Biden took the necessary, but painful, step of blocking fossil fuel imports from Russia, a deafening drone of “Drill, baby, drill!” was heard emanating from the fossil fuel industry and their political pawns.
But now isn’t the time to dig a deeper hole of fossil fuel dependence. Humanity faces a desperate imperative to curb our influence on the planet’s warming climate. Earth is abundantly blessed with clean, effectively limitless sources of energy — sunlight, rivers, wind, ocean waves and underground heat. What is needed now is a 21st century…
