EDF Group subsidiaries EDF Renewables UK and Hynamics are looking to build a green hydrogen production facility at the site of the former Redcar steelworks in the U.K.
The Tees Green Hydrogen project will use electricity from nearby Teesside Offshore Wind Farm and a new solar farm, which EDF Renewables UK plans to build near Redcar, to power its hydrogen electrolyzer, according to a March 9 news release. In the project’s initial phase, the electrolyzer will be 30 MW to 50 MW in size but is designed to scale over 500 MW, in line with emerging demand.
The initiative was announced at Teesside with steelmaker British Steel Ltd. and Brookfield Infrastructure Partners LP’s U.K. port operator subsidiary, PD Ports Ltd.. Arrangements have been made to supply PD Ports with hydrogen to decarbonize port operations.
