India green lights second phase of clean energy corridor

The Indian administration on Thursday approved the construction of the second phase of the so-called “green energy corridor”, which will see electricity generators feed sustainably-generated power into a national grid for nationwide distribution.The scheme will facilitate “grid integration and power evacuation of approximately 20 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy (RE) in seven states namely, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh”, according to a 6 January cabinet statement.Phase two will be developed at an estimated cost of INR120.3bn ($165m) and follows the first phase of the project, being implemented at a cost of INR101.4bn to help evacuate 24GW of clean energy.The corridors will help the world’s third-largest energy consumer achieve its target of 450GW of installed RE capacity by 2030.
